Yesterday I was discussing in an online board how to break a decision deadlock in life. There are real deadlocks, but I don t think they are very frequent most of the time, doing a pros and cons analysis is enough to decide what to do. Sometimes our judgement is impaired by lack of objectivity or by our inability to see things from a different point of view (it s hard to think straight when everything seems to be falling apart around you); talking to a friend or relative can help in these situations.
But there are times when nothing helps. When you are really stuck and nothing seems to break the deadlock. At these times I give it one or two days, sleep on the issue and if I cannot come up with a decision I assume the alternatives are equivalent to me and just flip a coin.
Of course, this will do if you can postpone the decision, giving yourself (and your inner self) time to decide on a course-of-action. But is there some way to speed up the process? During the discussion, someone came up with a rather smart quote by Rothstein character in Boardwalk Empire TV series:
So. for some reason, the danish tax authorities (Skat) has started requiring Adobe Acrobat for being able to see pdf files to work around a bug with handling of temporary files on Windows8 and shared computers and such.
Luckily there is a couple of easy workarounds. Like modifying the Javascript to check things at runtime using some browser specific addons. Or just do it like I did and write a actual browserplugin. I recently blogged about 3 languages reaching 100% translation for
debconf templates in wheezy.
Today, two more languages joined the club: French and Portuguese.
We're still on our way to get seven or even eight complete
translations in wheezy. Czech is now only missing "linux-latest" and
Spanish waits for sysvinit (which I just NMU'ed) and nova
(unfortunately an error in former translation was unnoticed and I
discovered it quite late).
David Pr vot is still trying to get Danish complete, by doing many fast
update rounds and NMUs. I hope he succeeds in this.
Favicons for Server Tabs
Distinguishing server tabs can be difficult, especially if you have plenty of
them. All server tabs have the same icon so you need to search for the right
name. I wondered why this issue doesn't happen so easily with a web browser
which usually also has lots of tabs open. Besides the page name there is the
favicon right in front. So why can't Smuxi make use of that simple but effective
technology? Well,

One thing that makes IRC really difficult for new comers is the important IRC
concept that channels are network specific. So what happens is people try to
find / join the channel they are looking for but on the wrong network. They
have to connect to the right server/network and then switch to the right tab,
before they can join the channel (using the /join command or join dialog). The
developers of Smuxi had a brainstorming session and came up with something that
should be easy enough for anyone to use and finally solves the issue: the
